Hiking Trail Overview
Located near Breaux Bridge in St. Martin Parish, Lake Martin hosts one of the largest wading bird rookeries in North America. From February through July, thousands of egrets, herons, roseate spoonbills, and other birds nest in the cypress trees. The Nature Conservancy manages the Cypress Island Preserve portion of the lake.

- Levee Trail - 2.5-mile path around part of the lake
- Rookery Road - Vehicle access with pullouts near nesting areas
- Boat/Kayak Launch - Water access for closer views
Wildlife Highlights
Beyond the spectacular bird rookery, Lake Martin is known for its easily viewable alligator population, with dozens visible during warm months. Snakes, turtles, frogs, and a variety of wetland plants create a complete swamp ecosystem that's unusually accessible for visitors.
